Mutoh Error Codes and the Parts to Check
This page lists the error codes shown on Mutoh ValueJet and XpertJet printers, what each one means, and which parts the service manual names as possible causes — in the order the manual lists them.
That order matters. On most codes the cheapest part is named first and the most expensive last. Working down the list rather than up is what stops a $40 cable fault turning into a $1,900 board purchase.
Before you replace anything
- Reseat the connector first. For a large number of codes the manual's first instruction is to reinsert the connector and re-run the self-diagnosis test, not to order a part.
- Check the firmware. For several faults incorrect firmware on the main side is listed ahead of the main board. For garbled output it is the only cause listed at all.
- Test with a different file. If the printer feeds extra media after a print and other data prints correctly, the fault is the damaged file, not the machine.
- Read the model plate. The suffix matters — a P, a WR, a UF. It changes which codes your machine can even produce.
Carriage and motor errors
These codes are consistent across the ValueJet and XpertJet ranges.

E092 in detail
The most common of these, and the one where order matters most. The manual lists eight causes; the carriage lock solenoid is named first and is among the cheapest. Before replacing it, the manual's own procedure is to reseat the connector and run Self Diagnosis > Test > Sensor > Lock Solenoid.
If the carriage feels stiff or noisy when moved by hand, check the CR return pulley. The main board is named last.

Print head errors
On the roll-fed XpertJet and ValueJet machines:

Single-head machines report only the first code of each pair. The XPJ-1341 series and the XPJ-1641SR-P produce E186, E188 and E190 — there is no E187, E189 or E191 on those models.
On E186 to E189 the head cable is listed before the print head. It is a fraction of the cost of a head, so it is the sensible first check.

Sub tank errors

The range depends on your colour configuration. A four-colour machine (KCMY) reports E134–E137 and E176–E179. An eight-colour machine extends to E139 plus E156 and E157, and E176–E183. The digit after the code identifies the affected channel.

E144 to E148 in detail
Serial communication failures between the main board and CR board. The manual's recovery order is: restart the printer, check the CR FFC connection, replace the CR FFC, then the CR board, then the main board. The cable is named first and is by far the cheapest of the three.
E154 in detail
A brown-out or a loose AC cable throws exactly the same code as a failed power supply board. Confirm the mains supply before ordering a board.

Heater and thermistor errors
Roll-fed machines only. UV flatbed models have no heaters and do not produce these codes.

UV flatbed models — a different code set
The XPJ-461UF and XPJ-661UF use their own numbering. The carriage and motor codes above still apply, but the head codes do not.

There are no sub tank codes on the UF series.
Faults with no error code
Many problems never show a code. These are the parts the manual names most often:
